This project is a Middle School project that I call the Sink or Float Challenge. This project introduces students to the concepts of 2D and 3D computer work through the use of a basic web-based 3D Modeling application called TinkerCad.
The challenge involves creating a 3D Printed boat that can both float AND hold additional weight (quarters). The challenge comes in as we test the boats to see whose boat can remain floating and hold the most quarters.
The process that students used to create this project was as follows:
Discuss the differences between 2D and 3D shapes and forms.
Navigate the TinkerCad interface through demonstrations.
Review Measurements of MM and Inches.
Customize designs by adjusting XYZ Coordinates, grouping objects, and making objects have a "holed" or see through appearance.
Research and Explore the impacts that weight and air have on an objects buoyancy.
Design a 3D Modeled boat.
Discuss the process of 3D printing and see their creations come to life!
Below are student samples of this project.
